John Oliver: I Got Through Election Night By Watching 'RuPaul's Drag Race'

John Oliver had one hell of a time getting through last November's presidential election, which saw Donald Trump, take the title as Commander-in-chief. Thankfully, he had RuPaul's Drag Race by his side to get through the all-night event.

Yup, that's right. HBO's Last Week Tonight host revealed to an audience during his hosting gig at TrevorLIVE fundraiser that he felt "hollow inside" as the election night results slowly poured in. "I watched five back-to-back episodes of RuPaul’s Drag Race. It was the version of America that I wanted to live in, rather than the one that was unfolding in history," Oliver told the New York City audience, as per Vanity Fair.

It was just one of the observations to take away from the Monday night (June 19) benefit to campaign the Trevor Project's work in suicide prevention and crisis intervention for LGBTQ youth. Coincidentally, Oliver discovered the organization the same day as the election on November 8, 2016.

"For those of you who don't know me, I am not like you; I am British. Yes, that does not make me better than you—anymore," he told the audience. "But let’s all acknowledge that more than 200 years ago, this would have been a very different evening. You would be getting less jokes from me and more instructions as to what I would like to get done tomorrow."
