February 7 is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

February 7 is the commemoration of the annual observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Dr. Laura W. Cheever joins Houston from PRIDE Radio to talk about the importance of this day and how according to new Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Data that a record-high 84.1% of black/African-Americans receiving HIV medical care are virally suppressed.

While still lower than the national Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program average of 87.1%, it is still a record for this critical population, a group that comprises more than 47% of RWHAP patients in 2018.

More than 500,000 people receive care through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program each year. HIV has transformed from a deadly disease to a manageable, chronic condition if there is access to high-quality health care, support and appropriate medications. National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is dedicated to making sure this critical population receives the message that care is available.
