John Legend made history on September 9 when he won an Emmy at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards alongside Andrew Lloyd Webber and Time Rice for “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.” Not only did the win earn John EGOT status (an honor he shares with a scant 15 other people), but he also became the first black man to gain the title and is one of the youngest EGOT winners ever.
With the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards airing September 17, we thought we’d compile a list of artists who have been nominated for an Emmy – be they for Daytime Emmy Awards, the Creative Arts Emmy Awards or the Primetime Emmy Awards. Read on!
1. Donald Glover (Childish Gambino)
The series he created and acted in, Atlanta, is nominated for sixteen Emmys. Glover is nominated for acting, writing, and directing.
2. RuPaul Charles
RuPaul Charles - He won the Outstanding Host Award the past two years and is nominated for a third time this year.
3. John Legend
John Legend made history with his EGOT win. He was nominated for his lead role of Jesus Christ and for his work as a producer on the show Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert, and won for his producer credit. He is one of the youngest EGOT winners and the first African-American man to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
4. Sara Bareilles
She was nominated for her first Emmy award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a limited series or movie category for her performance as Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert.
5. Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars is nominated for Outstanding Music Direction for his special Bruno Mars: 24K Magic Live at the Apollo.
6. Chance The Rapper
Nominated in 2017 for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for the original tune he wrote alongside three other writers, “Last Christmas,” that was featured in an episode of Saturday Night Live.
7. Snoop Dogg
Snoop Dogg was nominated for Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program in 2017. The nomination came from co-hosting the VH1 show Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party.
8. LL Cool J
LL Cool J was up for a nomination thanks to his producing on the show Lip Sync Battle. The nomination was for Outstanding Structured Reality Program was in 2017.
9. Lin-Manuel Miranda
For last year’s Emmy awards Lin-Manuel Miranda was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series due to his memorable Saturday Night Live hosting.
10. Hans Zimmer
Hans Zimmer co-produced the theme music for the National Geographic show Genius, and was nominated for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music back in 2017.
11. Common
Common was nominated for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics in 2017 for his song “Letter To The Free” written with Robert Glasper and Karriem Riggins for the Netflix series 13th.
12. Jack White
Jack White and producer T Bone Burnett curated the music direction for the PBS series The American Epic Sessions, which led to the nomination for Outstanding Music Direction at the 2017 Emmys.
