To riders of Washington, DC's Metrorail system, doors opening while the train is in motion is old hat. For visitors to Disney World, however, it was a harrowing experience that may force the park to shut down the iconic transportation system forever.
Quoting skyrocketing maintenance and upgrade costs, Disney World in Orlando, FL may permanently dismantle the system that shuttles parkgoers from the Magic Kingdom to Epcot and resort hotels inbetween.
The monorail, first introduced at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA, has existed as the main form of transportation at the Florida park since opening in the 1970's. Disney announced a new form of park transportation just last year called the "Skyliner" with gondolas to carry guests from park to park. This was intended to supplement the monorail and existing bus transport system. Now, it may be the ONLY way to travel in the air around Walt Disney World.
The video above shows the scary experience that some guests experienced last week while traveling to Epcot as the doors on the Red Monorail opened in mid-travel, many feet above the ground.
