Selena Gomez is looking to making some creative changes.
On Thursday (January 9), the pop star celebrated the long-awaited arrival of her third studio album, Rare, during iHeartRadio’s Album Release Party in Los Angeles. While speaking with JoJo Wright about the LP, a flashback clip played of Gomez’s music video to her 2015 jam “Hands to Myself,” in which the songstress strips down for the provocative visual.
Slightly embarrassed by the moment, Gomez reportedly revealed she would no longer make “overtly sexual” music videos to promote her work — and her little sister has a lot to do with her shift in self-expression. “I didn’t know you were going to play the video,” explained the 27-year-old, who was evidently surprised by the clip since her 6-year-old sister, Gracie, was also at the event. “I told my sister I will not be doing videos like that anymore. It’s not really necessary, in my opinion.”
With Rare, Gomez marked her first-ever number-one single with the album’s leader “Lose You to Love Me,” a heartfelt ballad about heartbreak and healing. She followed the track up with records like “Look At Her Now” and the title track, which received the music video treatment on release day.
As she revealed during the celebration, Rare became an open diary of sorts for the songbird, who had been battling with depression and anxiety while putting the album together. However, despite the difficult experience, Rare only seemed to make her stronger. “I’m happy and a little confused still, but so happy I went through that,” she reflected. "In order for the people to see I’m not a victim. … [Like] I don’t need to act in the manner of always getting down at myself. … I’m very, very excited [to release Rare] more because of my fans.”
