California Officials May Cancel Halloween

The days of trick-or-treating maybe behind us in this new day and age of COVID-19. California Health and Human Services Director Dr. Mark Ghaly stopped short of canceling the holiday all together but issued a new warning in light of the pandemic, “Trick or treating — the type of mixing that comes in our traditional trick or treating festivities — is really not advised under COVID.” he said.

Los Angeles County recently backtracked on a recent statement banning the holiday this year. Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said that the guidelines have been “slightly revised" switching from a full ban of activities to a directive of “not recommended.”

Although he did not issue any further statement at this time, a spokesperson from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office stated that the Governor will clarify rules for Halloween on a statewide basis in the coming weeks. As the holiday season approaches and a sense of wanting to be together increases officials warn against letting your guard down and suggest only gathering with those you live with, and attempt to stay virtually connected with those outside of your social bubble.
